Of the few animals that make up the Antarctic food web there is a certain
balance of the food consumed and the amount of creatures that consume them.
On top of the food chain, the producer (plankton) converts solar energy
into chemical energy. Primary consumers (Cod and Krill) feed on the producer,
the energy changes form that can be stored in animal cells. Secondary Consumers
(squid, seal, penguin, whale and sea birds) transform the energy once again.
Filter feeders (Baleen whales that feed on micro-organisms) are fed upon
by Toothed Whales (Killer whale and sperm Whale). The remains of other
creature's meals are consumed by scavengers (Petrel, Skua, Albatross).
Finally, detrial feeders (Albatross) feed on the waste products of the
other Antarctic animals and humans.
